Whether you write fiction or non-fiction, write for fun or publish for profit in the writing game it's all hit and miss. A few years ago before there was not so much information about self-publishing a book I took a chance and published a few how to books. They did well and I turned a profit but did not get rich.
I turned the chapter and started publishing ebooks which went well for a while but I got lazy and didn't update them. Now I mainly write on blogs, web sites, and other Internet venues. I also make money with marketing products and sometimes selling things online.
Would I like to write the great American novel and have it become a New York Times Bestseller? Sure I would. But I learned as a writer you have to have thick skin and be able to take the criticism along with the compliments as not everyone will enjoy your work.
I was fortunate to be able to have some of my worked review in the New York Times, in a couple of Women's Magazines, and local newspapers. Along with being able to speak with some interesting writers and others along the way. Lately it's been more quiet but someday again I may try and reach for the stars and set another goal to make it big!
The best advice I can tell a writers is to write every day. Choose a topic that you enjoy writing about and don't do what everyone else is doing. Write for yourself and try to get others to read your writing. Check out writing web sites and communicate with other writers on what they are doing. Write for web sites that pay you. Write because you enjoy writing and the rewards will follow.
